Review: Children of Blood and Bone

Author: Tomi Adeyemi

Goodreads Description

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zelie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now, Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers—and her growing feelings for the enemy.

Review:

Okay, so let me start off by saying that this was my most anticipated ARC at yallfest last year, and I’m SO glad that I was able to get this! I waited in line for two hours, and it was absolutely worth it! As far as I know, this is Adeyemi’s debut novel, and I have to say that she hit it out of the park. Multiple times.

The story follows a young diviner, Zelie. Throughout the book we learn about her past and how magic has disappeared, and how she is chosen by the gods to return it to her people. During the story we meet some other amazing characters who bring so much to the story including a rogue princess, and a prince who is out to end magic permanently.

This book does have multiple points of views, each telling the story/background or history of a certain character. Adeyemi does an amazing job of giving each individual character their own voice and personality. I’ve read some books in the past with multiple POVs and it seemed that the characters were all the same. You definitely won’t have a problem with that in this book. Each character is given so much emotion and you can definitely tell Adeyemi is extremely talented at storytelling. Even the characters that don’t have chapters from their POV come alive on the page.

For those of you that don’t know, I am a HUGE fantasy fan, and I don’t like a lot of romance in books. With that said, this book is the perfect fantasy novel that does include a little bit of romance, but not enough to make me cringe. =]

I’m also a sucker for bad ass females in any story, so I was super excited to find out that there are multiple bad ass female characters in this book!! SO, if you’re looking for an amazing fantasy with a hint of romance, I suggest you pick this up! This book releases on March 6, 2018!!

I’m already dying for the sequel to this! =]
